From Sedona to Grand Canyon

After spending the morning figuring out a rough itinerary for the rest of our trip, Lisa and I packed up the car while Segui looked anxiously on from the cabin, no doubt fearing that we would be leaving without him. I attempted to reason with Segui, explaining that there's not necessarily a causal connection between us packing the car and him being left behind ... but I was unsuccessful, and he spent the morning expressing the kind of depression that only comes before us taking a big trip without him.

Today's destination was the Grand Canyon. On route from Sedona, we stopped off in Flagstaff for some tourist info and to perform some minor maintainance on the car. Leaving Flagstaff, we decided to listen to an audiobook tour of the Grand Canyon that Lisa had downloaded from audible.com. It was one of the most annoying things I've ever heard: a Disneyesque take on the wonders of the canyon, seemingly read by the woman who narrated the intro to the TV show Quantum Leap.

Our journey then went from bad to worse. Traveling north on the 64, just before the Grand Canyon, we witnessed the aftermath of a nasty road accident. It was unclear exactly what had happened; possibly a motorcyclist who had been seriously hurt. There were an awful lot of cars, buses and RVs at the side of the road, making the scene even more ominous and surreal.

We arrived at the Grand Canyon just before sunset and set up camp. We made a mad dash and parked illegally in order to witness the sun go down over the canyon. Returning to our campsite, we made dinner and then ceremoniously burned an old IML t-shirt of mine. It was an cathartic and cleansing experience. The t-shirt created beautiful, gigantic flames in the fire. We then climbed into our tent and watched an episode of the Daily Show on Lisa's laptop.
